The iconic biblical phrase describing the origin of the world has always evoked the image of a primordial ocean — a fluid void preceding the creation of everything we know.
For centuries, this narrative remained within the realm of faith and metaphor.
However, recent discoveries in cutting-edge physics suggest that the idea of a "liquid beginning" for the cosmos is not confined to sacred texts. Scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) have recreated the exact conditions of the first microseconds following the Big Bang in the laboratory.
The result surprised the academic world: in its initial moments, the Universe was not a chaotic, expanding gas, but rather a dense, ultra-hot fluid.
THE COSMIC "SOUP"
To understand the phenomenon, researchers used the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) — the world's largest particle accelerator. By colliding lead atoms at nearly the speed of light, they managed to melt matter, recreating a substance known as quark-gluon plasma.
Until then, astrophysicists believed this initial state of the Universe would behave like a thermal gas. However, the data showed that this "cosmic soup" acted as a perfect liquid.
In physics, a liquid is considered perfect when it offers almost no resistance to movement, exhibiting a viscosity close to zero.
This means that the primordial Universe flowed in perfect synchrony and coordination, long before the formation of the first stars and planets.
SCIENCE AND REFLECTION
The discovery does not seek to validate religious dogmas, but it establishes an inevitable bridge for reflection among the general public.
The poetic image of a cosmos emerging and organizing itself from a fluid state — "hovered over the waters" — finds an unexpected echo in the equations of quantum physics.
Both ancient intuition and modern science seem to agree on one point: before the solidity of Earth and the void of space, the beginning of everything was the purest fluidity.
THE MYTHS ECO IN MODERN SCIENCE
The convergence between CERN’s primordial fluidity and the text of Genesis is not an isolated case in the history of human thought.
The Italian philosopher Giambattista Vico (1668–1744) argued that ancient myths were neither lies nor the product of ignorance, but rather humanity's "poetic wisdom."
For Vico, early peoples recorded profound truths about reality through metaphors and physical images, long before humans developed abstract scientific language.
This "collective memory" recurs in various creation traditions:
Greek Chaos: In Greek mythology, the first deity to emerge is Chaos—often described not as disorder, but as an immense void, an indistinct and fluid primordial matter from which all existence was born.
Blavatsky’s Point within the Circle: In the 19th century, the Theosophist thinker Helena Blavatsky drew upon Eastern traditions, identifying the symbol of a circle with a central point as the representation of the beginning of each Manvantara (the great cycle of the Universe's manifestation).
The point represents the awakening of consciousness or concentrated energy within the infinite ocean of absolute space.
INTELIGENCE WITHIN FLUIDITY
Viewed through the lens of these traditions, the famous phrase "the Spirit of God hovered over the waters" takes on an even deeper layer of meaning.
More than just a visual image, the "spirit" can be interpreted as an incorporeal intelligence—a subtle force that permeates, organizes, and sustains the very existence of this primordial fluid.
When CERN scientists point out that the early Universe behaved like a "perfect liquid" with zero viscosity — moving in absolute synchrony and coordination — modern physics seems to describe, in its own mathematical way, the presence of an intrinsic order that has governed the cosmos since its first microsecond.
Science advances toward the future, yet it often finds the footprints left by the intuition of the ancients in the past.
